bill clinton's chest pains, sudden trip to the hospital, and his heart procedure. to help us understand the former president's condition we are joined this morning by dr. anthony demaria, chief of the division of cardiology at university of california san diego. good morning, doctor. thanks so much for joining us. >> good morning. >> i wonder if first you could just tell us in layman terms, those of us who have no idea what exactly this is that involves the former president, what was the procedure and what exactly was done? >> well, the coronary arteries run on the outside of the heart. they're about three or four millimeters in diameter. and they get blockages in them. and that obstructs blood flow. and so what was done with president clinton is the stent, which is a serrated metal tube, was crimped around a balloon. and that balloon was then put to straddle across the lesion, and when the balloon was inflated, the stent expanded and the vessel was expanded so the obstruction was eliminated. and that is a form of angioplasty with the placement of the metal stent.
